Knowledge of ice climbing equipment, what is needed
and how to use it, is absolutely necessary to ensure safety under
perilous conditions. Ice climbing is among the fastest growing
winter sports in the world. Each climb provides a unique challenge
for any climber, irrespective of skill level. As is the case with
similar activities, like rock climbing, an athlete is only as
good as his equipment.
There are accessories and add-ons out there which are superfluous,
but some items are obligatory. Essential ice climbing equipment
includes ropes, harnesses, helmets, crampons, carabiners, quickdraws
and belay devices. All gear should be carefully inspected before
each climb, if even the smallest flaw exists, do not use the equipment.
Shoes and clothing, specifically designed for ice climbing should
also be worn.
Before a climb, other steps need to be taken, beyond the purchase
of quality ice climbing equipment. Fitness is critical. Climbers
need to be prepared mentally and physically for such a demanding
activity. Know where you’re climbing. Do some research on
the area before you get going. If possible, talk to someone who
has been there before. Whenever you head into the outdoors, let
someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.
