Ice climbing equipment FAQs
Q. I’m a rock climber, and I’ve noticed a lot of
overlap between my gear and ice climbing gear, can’t I just use
my stuff on the ice?
A. Unfortunately, the answer is no. In fact, that would be
a very unsafe practice. Even though the two activities require similar
gear such as ropes, harnesses, and carabiners, they are designed quite
differently and are in no way interchangeable.
Q. Crampon… I don’t like the sounds of that, what
is it?
A. Crampons are a type of spiked footwear that provides traction
on snow and ice. They are made of lightweight metal and fit over the
top of shoes or boots. Special front-pointed crampons are necessary
when climbing ice.
Q. Should I buy an ice climbing tool with an adze or hammer
on the head?
A. It depends on what type of climbing you’ll be doing.
A lot of tools are designed to accommodate both instruments at different
times. These are a good way to go since some climbs may require both
an adze and a hammer. An adze is used to create steps or clear away
snow or bad ice. A hammer is required to install pound-in protection
such as pitons.
