Ice climbing gear
Ice climbing gear includes a lot of the same things you need for regular
climbing, but a lot of it is highly specialized and can quickly get
expensive. But ice climbing is not the kind of sport you want to be
skimping on equipment, so be prepared to shell out the bucks.
Some of the ice climbing gear you will need includes:
• Boots – These boots are unlike any boots you are used
to wearing. Pretty much the only place you can wear boots like this
is when ice climbing because they feature crampon attachments –
crampons are long, sharp cleats that dig into the ice wall for proper
footing.
• Ice tools – tools include ice axes, adzes, hammers, and
combinations of all three.
• Ropes and harnesses – this part of ice climbing gear
is nearly identical to regular climbing ropes and harnesses.
• Carabiners, quick draws, daisy chains, ascenders, descenders
– these all form your protection and movement on the ice. Not
for beginners, this equipment is used to “lead” climbs.
• Gloves –These gloves are rough – kind of like sandpaper
– and are vital when trying to get any kind of a grip on your
ice tools. They also keep your hands warm.
